WORKSHOP CONTENT DETAILS
Workshop 1 (CMPP 1.5 credits)
Communicating data using words and visual elements - tips and tricks for working with data-rich documents
Health and medical writing often deal with data – research data, population health statistics and so on. High-quality data presented clearly and accurately make for powerful, effective communication.
This interactive workshop explores the presentation of data. It looks at:
• using the right words when writing or editing work about data and statistics
• choosing the right type of visual presentation
• designing the visual to make it effective and accessible.
Workshop 2
Health meets the headlines – improving the quality of healthcare reporting
Healthcare reporting is an important influence on public perceptions and decision-making.
Research shows media coverage of tests and treatments tends to favour benefits, play down harms, and often fails to include conflicts of
interest. This special Wiser Healthcare workshop offers strategies to better inform the public, with fresh tips, contacts, and
compelling story ideas. It will introduce new reporters to the counter-intuitive problem of overdiagnosis and deepen the understanding
and skills of more experienced writers.
The Wiser Healthcare Research Collaboration to reduce overdiagnosis and overtreatment includes academics from the University of Sydney, Bond
University, the University of Wollongong, and Monash University.
(Note that this workshop is open to everyone, but is recommended for people working as journalists.)
Journalists can register to attend this workshop as a single session, plus lunch; the cost of this is being covered by the Wiser
Healthcare Research Collaboration so attendance at this workshop is free for working journalists.
NOTE: Journalists wanting to take advantage of complimentary registration for for the 'Health meets the headlines – improving the quality of
healthcare reporting' workshop and lunch do not need to complete the full registration process but should contact the conference organiser
directly at amwa@abercrombiemanagement.com.au
Workshop 3 (CMPP 1.5 credits)
Introduction to accessibility: what it is and why it matters
Learn how to create style and content to make it accessible for all your audiences. By the end of this interactive workshop, participants should be better able to:
• know why accessibility is important
• understand the need for rigorous use of styles when writing documents
• write text that is simpler and more accessible
• design accessible tables and figures.
Workshop 4
Time management and project management for medical writers/communicators
Medical writers and communicators work in a deadline-driven environment, producing high-quality documents on time and to budget. In addition to excellent writing skills, successful writers display several key competencies, including effective time management, prioritisation, and delegation. In this interactive workshop we will explore the factors that contribute to effective time management by gaining insights into personality type and productive habits. We will then examine practical strategies and tools that can be applied in the workplace to keep you on track and out of the rabbit hole.
Workshop 5
Set for success: how to build a thriving freelance business
Discover the essentials for creating a successful freelance medical writing business, including the basics of setting up, how to find your first clients, and how to market yourself. Plus learn how to keep things running smoothly, with tips for taking care of yourself and managing the business so it's sustainable for years to come. You'll hear from writers with very different backgrounds - all of whom have built businesses they love that work for them. And there will be lots of opportunity for Q&A so come prepared with your burning questions!
