For more than 30 years, we have supported the professional development of medical writers from throughout Australasia.
The Australasian Medical Writers Association (AMWA) is a not-for-profit, established in 1982 with approximately 300 members from around Australia, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.
Membership is open to anyone interested in health and medical communications. We offer full and student membership options.
Need medical writing support? We offer several advertising options.
The AMWA PDP has been designed specifically for our members and aims to offer a wide selection of high-quality workshops and webinars in the areas of medical writing, editing, public relations, web design and a variety of topical issues.
AMWA is pleased to be able to offer experienced medical writers and editors to act as mentors for those wanting to enter the profession, or those looking for guidance on how to set themselves up in the freelance business.
There are no medical writing courses offered at the undergraduate level in Australasia. Instead, medical writers can start with degrees in fields such as journalism, media and communications. Our extensive resource centre is available for AMWA members only.
AMWA webinars are offered every few months throughout the year. They cover a broad range of topics specific to medical writers. Our next webinar is on Tuesday 27 October titled 'Medical Writing for the Web' presented by Past President of AMWA, Michelle Guillemard.
"As a trainee in rural Australia working in Aboriginal health, I hope to bring my own perspective to my writing and to demonstrate that careers in writing and academia can be done outside of major centres. The piece I have submitted illustrates my aim as a writer to bring human aspects of medicine for both doctors and patients alongside an evidence-based approach."
“As the winner of the AMWA Early Career Award I attended the conference in Melbourne. It was a fantastic event with inspiring and entertaining presentations, informative workshops, and plenty of opportunity for networking. If you’re in two minds, my advice is DO IT!!”
For those who attended the AMWA 2020 Special Virtual Event: 'Medical Writing and Communication During the COVID-19 Crisis'
on Thursday 19 November, we are sure you would agree that it was an invaluable two hours. The calibre of speakers and their learnings from
this unprecedented crisis were beyond our expectations. We are humbled by their willingness to give their personal time to share their
experience with us.
If you missed the live event, a recording is available to AMWA members in the Members
Area. If
you are not yet an AMWA member, but would like to join, you can visit our membership and benefits page here. Annual
membership is $80 for full members and $40 for students.
